PROACTION SUCCESS STORY – SWANSEA BASKETBALL PROGRAM

PC Joe Mullally and other officers from 11 Division ran a co-ed basketball program out of the Swansea Community Center every Saturday for 9 months where youth learned basketball skills through drills and pickup games. The youth even participated in the Police Games at Downsview Park this past June. The officer advised that because of the program, the youth got to know officers on a more personal level through this positive experience and that over the course of the program, a certain level of trust and understanding was established between the officers, the youth and the community.

Below is a quote from a program participant.

“My names is Julian and I am 12 years old. I have been attending the Supporting Swansea Youth Saturday Basketball Program with my younger brother Asher who is 8 and my mom who volunteers there. I like the program because I can play basketball with the other kids from the community. I also received a cool basketball uniform for our team and got to take part in the Police Games at Downsview Park at the Hoop Dome. We played against other teams from different communities. It was really cool. We got to play and stay all day and got some free stuff to take home and show our friends and family. I really look forward to going back in September when the program restarts. Thank you ProAction for helping to create my basketball team Swansea United.”
