Meet Abigail, our 2025 Durham Youth Award winner! Through the Lunch with a Liaison program, Abigail stepped into a leadership role - mentoring her peers and offering ongoing encouragement. She's grown into a more confident, responsible young leader who now engages openly with peers and officers in her community. Most recently, she accomplished her goal of joining the Durham Regional Police YIPI program - a testament to her determination and commitment to personal growth. Join us in celebrating the recipient of the 2025 Chuck Mercier Award winner: PC Iyan Dusko, in recognition of his development and outstanding leadership of ProAction Sweat for Change! Drawing on his experience as both an athlete and a local high school wrestling coach, PC Dusko from Durham Regional Police used wrestling and fitness as a powerful way to engage youth, build trust, and strengthen positive relationships through the ProAction Sweat for Change program. The program provided youth with a solid foundation of skills through officer-led instruction, while also creating a long-lasting network of support through ongoing mentorship well beyond the program’s completion. Golf isn't always accessible. For many local young people, cost alone puts it out of reach, and along with it, all the confidence, focus, and connections the sport can build. The Golf Fore All ProAction program, led by police officers from TPS 12 Division, is changing that. The first session brought youth to the course to try something new, learn from the pros, and step into a sport they wouldn't have picked up otherwise. Big thanks to Matt and Owen from Golf Ontario for teaching the kids, to our TPS police partners and to our community partners—it takes a village! Established in 2007, our Durham Chapter has become a driving force for youth engagement across the region working alongside Durham Regional Police Service to create opportunities that shape young lives. In 2025, Durham officers led programs ranging from Cops with Kids Laser Tag to Cops & Kids Golf Classic to Baa-rilliant Connections Youth and Police Goat Yoga. Andrew joined the Kicks for Kids and Cops program as a young participant, building his soccer skills in a supportive team environment. After graduating, he returned as a volunteer mentor, giving younger participants the encouragement he once received. Inspired by his experience, Andrew applied to and was accepted into the Toronto Police YIPI program and is now pursuing a career in policing to continue giving back to the community that gave to him. There's something powerful about learning to cook a meal. It builds confidence. It builds independence. And when it happens alongside mentors, it builds trust that lasts. Cook With A Cop ProAction program brought youth in Toronto Police Service 12 Division into the kitchen with PC Rallis, learning new skills, sharing meals, and forming connections that go far beyond the recipes. Every participant left with a cookbook made by PC Rallis, a reminder of what they learned and the people who taught them. Programs like this don't just teach a skill. They give young people something to hold onto. Programs like Cook With A Cop are only possible thanks to amazing supporters like you. Thanks to our supporters, community youth programs like Mentorship Youth (M.Y.) Camp are possible—thank you! M.Y. Camp (Mentorship Youth Camp) is a free program for Halton region students in grades 7 to 9 who want to develop their leadership skills and learn more about community safety and well-being. Through hands-on activities led by Halton Regional Police Service officers and community partners, participants build confidence, self-esteem, and practical life skills.
