My name is Abuzar Haider. I am writing to narrate my success story as told through the lens of the Fortis Vitam CrossFit program, sponsored by ProAction Cops & Kids.

I grew up in a neighbourhood called Oriole Crescent in the east end of Hamilton. During my childhood through to my mid-teens, I was surrounded by crime and was living in a dysfunctional household. Although I tried my best in school, I had very few goals and constantly struggled with mental health issues.

About halfway through Grade 8, a friend convinced me to attend a class for the Fortis Vitam CrossFit program, run by Hamilton officer Jon Curtis. Immediately, I feel in love with it.  Officer Curtis and his volunteers welcomed me with open arms and earned my trust through constant encouragement, understanding, and kindness.  Every class I learned something new – whether it was a cue for an exercise, or a life lesson.

As I continued attending the program, physical activity became no only a way to stay in shape, but an outlet for all my negative emotions. As I have worked through the challenges I have faced in my high school years, Officer Curtis and many of the volunteers at the program have continued to check in often and support me.  Physical activity continues to be an outlet, but it is also the essence of my aspirations to become a performance coach and physical therapist.

Had I not met Officer Curtis and attended his program, I would not have discovered my passion for physical activity and helping others or developed the character and resilience I have, both of which have carried me through the trials I have faced and will continue to serve me well.

As I continue my journey through life, my dreams only grow.  Some day, I aspire to give troubled youth such as my past self what Officer Curtis and Fortis Vitam CrossFit gave me: hope
